I think it will depend on the software you have on the hard drive.

Some software is installed based on your compatibility for the machine and hardware.

Some programs will work while others may not.

just make sure you can format them to a mac and windows compatible partition, then you'll be fine.

The vendors of external disk, if they good, usually post on it will it work both Windows and Mac OS.
