You don't have to be a nerd to understand.

I'll tell you why he doesn't "upgrade".

Right now the version of phpBB he's using is 2.0
I think the newest is 3.x
If he does decide to change and update his current phpBB, he'll have to edit every single script he's currently using.

Every feature he has won't be compatible with 3.x (lotto, forum gold, shoutbox, clans, warns, everything)
