without you providing the specific bsod error its giving you, here are my thoughts.

If your reformatting the drive, not doing an upgrade/overlay install, then no it would not be the corrupt win98 installed currently.

when the install bluescreens that early in the phase on a reformat operation, its 90% of the time a hardware problem, 9% of the time memory problem, 1% other.

if the 98 is corrupt, its possible that it is so because the drive is faulty, wich would cause the 2k install to crash as well.

it may also be a memory(ram) problem, try runnin memtest86 on the system
http://www.memtest86.com/

if that comes up clean, i would try replacing the drive with a different one.

and in the 1% range, thiers always the chance your install disc has gone bad, cdrom not reading it right, etc.

then i would run the memtest on it, if that comes clean i would replace the cd-drive and ide cable. if that fails it may be the ide controller on the mobo, try using a pci ide-c for the cdrom if you get that far.

did you make a clean reformate before you try installing the win 2k?

i am using win 2k right now on my pentium 1... yes... old and pathetic... but i am too attached to this comp lol
it actually moves faster then my pentium 4.

so i dont think it would be a ram problem for you since my pentium 1 only has 64mb of ram and it runs it really smooth.

try putting in the start up disk and give it a clean install.... that should fix the problem... smile

He doesnt mean that theres to little ram, he means that the ram might be damaged or not allowing you to do the install for whatever reason. Just do that test i guess, and if not just go down his troubleshooting list :] Seems water tight to me.
