We can look at it this way, for their time, the original Star Wars movies were way ahead of everything else and brought something entirely new to the table. The new Star Wars movies? Sure, better special effects than the old ones, but not in comparison with movies of their time.

you cant use it as an argument that one part of the series is better than another because it "came first"

If you're a star wars enthusiast, you can. In my humble opinion, that is. Because 1, 2 and 3 are simply a bunch of horrible movies when compared to the originals. The thing that SAVES them is that they do what they are supposed to do - aka - they are the prequels to the trilogy.

Also, it's nto really comparable with Gollum or Neo cause the new star wars movies take place before the originals ~ and they've been expected for app 20 years.
