Colombian Indpendence Day: July, 20th

Colombia became independent from Spain on July 20th, 1810. It was one of the five countries liberated by Simon Bolivar (the others being Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Bolivia). Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama then formed the first Republic of Colombia. Ecuador and Venezuela declared their independence from Colombia in 1830. Panama declared its independence from Colombia in 1903 with the support of the United States of America.

Colombia Independence Day events will take place throughout the country, from the Grand National Concert to a 17-days hike to relive the journey of liberator Simon Bolivar 190 years ago.

The Independence Day celebrations have something to offer for every taste.

The biggest event on the Independence Day will be the Grand National Concert which takes place in 1099 municipalities and is for free. With a huge variety in music genres the concerts should be for everybody - hip hop, rock, metal, electronic, salsa, traditional Colombian music, tropipop and many more.



The flag of Colombia was adopted on November 26, 1863. It is a horizontal tricolour of yellow, blue and red. The yellow stripe takes up the top half of the flag and the blue and red take up a quarter of the space each.

Yellow: represents the all the gold found in the Colombian land.
Blue: represents the seas on Colombia's shores.
Red: represents the blood spilled on the battlegrounds by the heroes who gained Colombia's freedom.

Among the various things the United States did while being referred to as 'the police of the western hemisphere', it assisted in creating the Panama Canal, and during it's creation millions died from things including malaria. In 1913 (?) it was complete, and Panama bought the canal from the U.S.A during Jimmy Carter's presidency.

That's all I know about this subject.
