So, atleast for those living in the united states (i am not well versed in other countries laws) your bill of rights is about to go out the window. The ACTA or Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement has some very interesting tidbits of info in it. You can download the entire leaked version from the pirates in the bay. but, wiki has a nice explanation without any legal mumbo jumbo..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement

But major tidbits of info:

1. The leaked document includes a provision to force Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provide information about suspected copyright infringers without a warrant

2. The Authorities no longer need a warrant to view the contents of your computer, harddrives, jump drives, and any information storage aparatus. Which means, they can ILLEGALLY SEARCH AND SEIZE your computer without a signed warrant.

Hmm, why is this wrong you may ask....
Fourth AmendmentProtection from unreasonable search and seizure.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

They don't even require probable cause to do it, if they even have the slightest hunch that you are downloading illegally then they can search your stuff, they dont have to prove your doing it. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty with this new setup its changed to guilty until proven innocent

The agreement is not yet passed, it is still in negotiations but if it passes. then the government has officially chucked the bill of rights out the window and took a piss on it while they were at it.

My guess is it will be challenged via supreme court as unconstitutional or they will amend it.

From a strictly constitutional viewpoint, our rights have been gone since the Patriot Act. A little too late.

Wow, so stupid, but agreed. This will be ruled unconstitutional. If not and it is taken into action, the US will see the biggest class action law suit it has ever known.

Patriot Act is one thing as warrant cannot be issued for any illegality other than treason, espionage, and terrorism (including suspicion of each). Even if the feds found illegal material via the Patriot Act, they cannot take action using the Patriot Act.

The SOPA bill was killed in January 2012. Wasnt passed and doubt it will be. I know the Patriot Act will always remain though.

was it officially killed? or will it just be a clause in another bill that passes through unnoticed? and the patriot act is a screaming example of the deterioration of rights. i could be wrong but i do believe it was ben franklin who said "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Im personally not too against the Patriot Act because of the only reason that i stated earlier about what it can only be used for. I dont really like that they can view everything that is electronically sent/received but I dont have to worry because im not doing anything that it could ever be used against me for.

There are too many huge huge huge huge corporations against SOPA, i doubt it could get through. Every major search engine online is against it or they would have to go out of business. Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc wouldnt let it slip by.
