Each one does different things like:
Fight with you in battle
Extra travels per day
Extra forest fights
Bonus to att/def
Steal hp while attacking in forest and heal you

Those are just the ones I know about (I've only bought three mounts).

Make stopping by the ice castle in d2jsp hall and the lucky dip in formenia(sp?) part of your every day.

Every day is the same for me:
Start in d3jsp hall. Do the ice castle for gems/ charm/ gold/ extra turns.
Travel to form. Do the lucky dip for gems.
Travel to Glor. Burn candles for extra fights.
Travel to home town. Fight in the forest/ master.
Travel to two other random towns for fights/challenge the sphinx.
Travel back to d3jsp hall.
