i can agree that as a differential between sounds and an oddity when it comes to tone creation, it can be used correctly. but i rarely hear it used in a manner that appeals to me.. and i mentioned zztop because they are known for the cow bell, and i used the term remix because most zz top songs are longer than 1 minute lol.
but i suppose if we put all personal past prejudices behind us, i can admit that the cowbell COULD be epic if used correctly

Well, as a drummer I hated the cowbell as well - and as we speak I can't fucking find the stuff I wanted with epic cow bell action - that is probably cause I found out it was claves in the song I remembered... I've heard it being used epicly, but that was only for 30 seconds in a break or something.

ive messed with one of the hard plastic ones and actually did something cool, i was doing a 1/32nd fill doing triplets with my left hand on the ride. well i attached the cowbell to my 12" splash and i did the triplets but on the middle one i would hit the cowbell (i fucked it up just as much as i got it right lol) but mixing that with a solid 1/16th double bass and triplets on 3 halves and 4's, and some triplet rolls around the toms gave a really cool sound. Hard as fuck to pull something like that off during an actual jam session but it was pretty cool for timing and skill management and i wouldnt mind working more on it to incorporate it.

Wouldn't sound awesome an entire song, but for like a few bars it wouldn't be too bad if you ask me. I sold my thrashed out drumkit (that I used to play punk'd up grunge and/or freaked out jazz) and am now attempting to focus on the guitar. I probably listen way morre than I play 
And what I listen to? Everything. At this moment I've been going through my old vinyls, listening to Beatles, Jethro Tull, Yes, Focus, Genesis - that sorta thing.

i have a wierd way of explaining music but you picked up on it quickly and that could be interesting i rarely play in 1/8ths anymore unless its like jazz or classic rock.
yes is a fun band to listen to 
i am pissed because i have been trying like hell to learn "still counting by volbeat" but i cant make my body do that switch between the off beat and on beat smoothly, its always choppy and it pisses me off.. lol
