Can someone explain to me what the deal is with haunting a foe ?

I got a msg in my inbox that I was being haunted and I dont understand the pros/cons of how it works.

I've never actually known what it was for, I used it before I knew that you need 100 favor for resurrection

Is it linked to spirit at all? IE you can lose some forest fights when you're in low spirits.
