MUSKEGON COUNTY — A Muskegon parolee charged with sodomizing his pet pit bull last summer has been scheduled for trial in January.

Jose Antonio Sanchez, 59, is scheduled to have a two-day jury trial beginning Jan. 4 before Muskegon County 14th Circuit Judge William C. Marietti, according to court records.

Sanchez last month was referred to the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry for evaluation to determine his legal sanity at the time of the alleged crime.

His court-appointed attorney hopes to assert an insanity defense.

Results of his sanity evaluation were not available.

Sanchez is charged with sodomy, a 15-year felony.

According to a Muskegon Police Department official, Sanchez during a meeting with his parole officer admitted to the sexual assault that allegedly happened Aug. 2.
The incident then was reported to police.

The dog — which was examined by a veterinarian — was removed from Sanchez’s home and placed with Pound Buddies Rescue in Muskegon, police said.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections website, Sanchez previously was convicted of a 1997 sexual assault of a child under 13 and was sentenced to prison.
He was paroled on Jan. 14, 2009.
