On July 3, 2011, I visited the Laguna Art Museum. The painting that I choose for the assignment is titled “Grand Caynon” drawn by James Guilford Swinnerton in 1930. It is an oil painting done on a 27.5x33 inch canvas. The subject matter of this painting is a landscape painting. I am going to be writing about this painting. This is my thesis statement.

The lines used in this painting are expressive lines because the artist used his expressive motions to draw them. It uses traditional laws of perspective because as you can tell, the background mountains are bigger than the rocks in the front. Yea, there are identifiable shapes: rectangles, squares, cylinders, etc. There is a light source, it is the sun shining from the upper right I think? The predominant color schemes are orangish light brown, and a mix of other colors. I don’t know what complimentary or analogous colors are, and I am too lazy to alt-tab to google the terms in question. Same with implied textures. The painting is not smooth because I rubbed my hand over the oil painting and it was indeed not smooth. Yea, I can see the brush strokes or there wouldn’t be a painting. Yep, I can see a pattern. A pattern of rocks and trees. It should be to scale, but I need to make a trip to the Grand Canyon and confirm this. Yep, the specific focal point is the tip in the middle. The feelings that the artist seems to evoke are his expressive feelings about nature and the Grand Canyon. Can’t seem to find any symbolic/iconography meanings considering trees are trees, rocks are rocks. The title of the work does indeed help me visualize the Grand Canyon.

To be honest, I haven’t been paying much attention to your lectures in class. It was a really hot day and I wanted to spend my day at the beach instead of doing this assignment, so I took a quick picture and left.
